January - April 2008 Last Bell!!

Last 18 we celebrated our traditional Last Bell festivity. El Ultimo Timbre has become a celebration for students, families and all the members of our university community. These were some photos we took that day. As a teacher, I always feel very proud of each one of those students celebrating their final day as a student and wish them the best of luck in their lives now as professionals and hope, future and pride of our country.

12th AudioVisual Show!

The 12th Muestra Audiovisual took place last 17 and 18 of April at the Auditorium of URBE. Participants to the show were students from Social Communication and Graphic Design Schools. They presented short stories, documentaries, video clips, television programs and a newscast to the audience. The Best works were rewarded with the Oscar Belloso Award. Of course, there was music and lots of fun.

Congratulations to all participants, students and teachers that worked really hard to give us a great Audiovisual Show.

Earth Day!!!!

Earth Day, according to Wikipedia... It is now observed in 175 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit Earth Day Network, according to whom Earth Day is now "the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a half billion people every year." Environmental groups have sought to make Earth Day into a day of action which changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

What are you doing to be green?
Reuters asks artists like the Black Eyed Peas, Spinal Tap and Enrique Iglesias, what are you doing to be green? Backstage at the so-called "Greatest Show on Earth", Metallica, Corinne Bailey Rae, Kasabian, among others, talk to Reuters about saving the environment.

Here there is another great video about how to go green....

An educational video describing solar power and how it works. Solar power is one of many renewable, clean sources of energy available to us, and an alternative to fossil fuels, the use of which contributes to global warming.

Now, some fun tasks for you to learn and practice your English:
Well, that was our little tribute to earth....

Let♥s twitter our English away!

I got this from Kenneth Beare. He is inviting everybody to join him in twitter. This is what he wrote in his site.

What's Twitter you ask? Twitter is a tool that you can use to send messages of up to 140 characters to a group of followers while you also follow others. To understand, here is a video called Twitter in Plain English which provides a good introduction:

This is a great tool that works with any device that you use, k to connect to the Internet. The messages are short, and easy to read. It's the perfect platform to practice English structure, idioms and phrases! The idea works like this:

  • Sign up for a free Twitter account
  • Once you've signed up, log in to your account. You can add a background, a picture of yourself and a short biography if you want.
  • Navigate to the Englishfeed Twitter Page and click on "Follow" which you'll see on the left hand side of the page
  • Begin receiving the updates on what we're working on that day, respond by writing an example using the grammar, idiom or structure of the day.
  • You can participate as much as you want.
We also have a twitter account there. You can read the updates in our twitter widget. Please, join twitter and add doris3meflcen. Hope you can join us!

Answering Machine Messages

Here you have some examples of answerng machine messages for you to practice.

Hi, This is Jennifer. I can’t come to the phone right now. Please, leave me a message, and I’ll call you back as soon as possible.

  • Hi, I can’t answer the phone right now. Please, leave a message after the beep.

  • Please, leave a message and I will call you back.

  • Please, leave your name, your number and a brief message after the beep.

When leaving a message, remember to use Object pronouns. An object pronoun is used as an object of a verb in a sentence.

  • I call Susan - I call her

  • I left Carlos a message - I left him a message.

Go to the Centre for Education and Training (CET) , Ingles Mundial or to Language Guide to practice using object pronouns.

Now, What do people listen to when you don't answer your phone?
